A Virginia man has been arrested in connection with two pipe bombs placed outside the headquarters of the Republican and Democratic national committees on the eve of the 2021 Capitol riot.
US Attorney General Pam Bondi stated that Brian Cole Jr., 30, was arrested without incident early on Thursday morning. He faces charges of using an explosive device and attempted malicious destruction through explosive materials.
Officials have not clarified a possible motive behind the planting of the bombs, which were safely deactivated without detonation.
This remarkable case comes after a lengthy investigation where a significant $500,000 reward failed to produce actionable information until now. The FBI, however, did not receive any new leads that contributed to Cole's arrest.
The devices were placed on January 5, 2021, and were discovered the following afternoon as supporters of Donald Trump stormed the Capitol. Notably, Kamala Harris, the US vice president-elect at that time, had to be evacuated shortly after the bombs were found.
Cole is reported to live with his parents in Woodbridge, about 20 miles from Washington and works for a bail bond company.
Investigators have combed through an extensive array of evidence, including about three million lines of data. According to court documents, Cole allegedly purchased bomb-making materials over the preceding years, including metal end caps, wires, and timers.
FBI officials expressed relief at finally making an arrest in this high-profile case, shedding light on the intense investigative efforts and perseverance of the agents involved.
