In brief

The company aims to save $2 billion by 2026, focusing more on digital capabilities and AI.

BP is planning to reduce its workforce by approximately 4,700 positions, equating to over 5% of its total staff. The oil giant, which has a global team of around 90,000 employees, confirmed these cuts in a recent announcement, although specific numbers per country remain undisclosed. Alongside the 4,700 job eliminations, BP also plans to cut about 3,000 contractor roles this year. In the UK, where BP employs around 14,000 people, 6,000 of whom work at petrol and service stations, these specific roles are largely unaffected by the cuts. Murray Auchincloss, the chief executive, initiated this strategy last year to simplify operations and has set a target to reduce costs by $2 billion (£1.6 billion) by 2026—$500 million of which is expected to be saved this year. Auchincloss acknowledged the uncertainty these job losses create for affected employees and their teams, while emphasizing the company's objective to evolve into a more focused, higher-value entity by integrating advanced digital solutions. He noted that about 2,600 of the contractors impacted by these cuts had already departed the company.
