In brief

Katie Zacharia was announced as President Trump’s press secretary but exited her role only five days later after a tense first briefing. Trump publicly urged her to reconsider, citing media mistreatment. Politically, Democrats seized the moment to criticize the administration amid looming midterm elections, while Zchaeria thanked Trump on X. The incident echoes past brief stays in the White House communications team.

Katie Zacharia taps out just 5 days after stepping into the White House spotlight.

The 42‑year‑old, who was announced as President Trump’s new press secretary, left the post on Friday after a tense first briefing that left reporters scrambling for answers. Prior to her exit, Trump had told reporters he called her “pretty nastily” and that she could reconsider the role.

Stakeholders, pundits and a wave of media criticism followed Zacharia’s brief appearance, which lasted under 15 minutes and offered three questions to officials. Questions questioned her legal credentials and early admission of not passing the bar exam.

With the 2026 midterm elections looming, Democrats seized the moment – Hakeem Jeffries called the departure a sign that the “MAGA extremists continue to fall apart.”

Despite the turbulence, Zacharia posted a thank‑you note on X to Trump, describing him as “kind, wonderful, gracious, thoughtful, enthusiastic and the most hardworking man.”

The move echoes prior brief stints of Trump’s press team, with former communications director Anthony Scaramucci leaving after only 10 days in 2017.

She had previously served as a communications adviser for Trump’s social media platform Truth Social and was a regular on right‑wing networks such as Fox and Newsmax.
