Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that Kyiv risks losing US support over a White House plan on how to end the war with Russia.
Addressing the nation, Zelensky stated that Ukraine might face a very difficult choice: either losing dignity, or risk losing a key partner, adding that today is one of the most difficult moments in our history.
The leaked US peace plan includes proposals that Kyiv had previously ruled out: ceding eastern areas it now controls, significantly cutting its army size, and pledging not to join NATO. These provisions are seen as heavily leaning towards Russia, with President Vladimir Putin claiming the plan could serve as a basis for a peace settlement.
During a meeting with his security cabinet, Putin acknowledged receipt of the plan but stated Russia was prepared to continue fighting if necessary.
US President Donald Trump emphasized that Zelensky would have to accept the plan, or else the conflict would continue. With Ukraine dependent on US military aid to combat increasing Russian assaults, the stakes are higher than ever.
In his speech, Zelensky also called for unity among Ukrainians, stating that the nation's interests must be considered, and that they would propose alternatives to the current peace plan to their American partners.
During a series of diplomatic talks, leaders from the UK, France, and Germany assured Zelensky of ongoing support, asserting that Ukraine’s sovereignty should be paramount.
Despite the tensions, Zelensky remains committed to exploring other options to influence the terms of the peace plan, indicating that negotiations are still very much alive.
