The journey through Cape Breton Island, nestled in Nova Scotia, is known for its stunning views, yet the real spotlight is on the Membertou First Nation. Chief Terry Paul has been at the helm for an impressive 40 years, steering the community towards economic independence and cultural revival. In 2021, under his guidance, Membertou made a groundbreaking investment by acquiring a 50% stake in Clearwater Seafoods, marking the largest investment by Indigenous peoples in Canada's seafood sector, valued at a staggering 1 billion Canadian dollars. Recently, they also secured a deal to acquire a historic shipyard, a sign of their growing influence. The community's proactive measures extend beyond business; they are actively reclaiming land, once avoided by delivery services, to enhance their living space. As graduation rates improve and Mi’kmaq language initiatives flourish, the youth are proudly choosing to stay and grow within their culture.Upon reaching the Membertou reserve, a vibrant red sign proclaims, "Membertou: Welcoming the World," a testament to their community spirit and ambitious outlook for the future.
