Mali's military junta has apprehended a French national, Yann Vezilier, on allegations of espionage aimed at destabilizing the country. In a recent televised address, Security Minister Gen Daoud Aly Mohammedine claimed that Vezilier acted “on behalf of the French intelligence service,” though he has yet to respond to these allegations. This incident coincides with the detention of various military personnel accused of plotting against the ruling government, including two senior generals.

The junta has indicated that at least 55 soldiers have been arrested as part of this investigation, which centers on alleged foreign interference in Mali’s internal affairs. Political tensions have escalated recently, leading to the detainment of former Prime Ministers for potential state crimes. Following protests against the military government, the junta disbanded all political parties, stalling the promised elections and extending its authority until at least 2030.

In light of increasing jihadist violence and the breakdown of ties with France, Mali has sought assistance from Russian allies, seeking new strategies to enhance security. While the situation unfolds, uncertainty remains regarding the stability of governance and peace in this West African nation.
