In brief

Coupang announced a net loss of 715.1 billion won in its September quarter, a reversal from a profit the year before. The loss was driven by expenses linked to a July fire at an Incheon warehouse and lingering effects of a 2025 data breach, even as sales rose 11 %. It marks three consecutive quarterly losses for the company.

On November 4, 2026, e‑commerce company Coupang Inc. announced it posted a net loss of 715.1 billion won in the quarter ending September, after earning a profit of 131.6 billion won a year earlier.

Sales for the same period climbed 11 % to 14.22 trillion won, up from 12.85 trillion won a year earlier.

Operating results also fell sharply; the company recorded an operating loss of 642.3 billion won, compared with an operating profit of 224.5 billion won in the same quarter of 2025.

Analysts say the biggest driver of the decline was the July fire at a Coupang Fulfillment Center in Incheon, about 30 kilometers west of Seoul.

The blaze was the second‑longest warehouse fire in South Korea, following a 2021 fire that burned for about 130 hours at a distribution center in Icheon.

In addition to fire‑related repairs and loss of inventory, the quarter was hit by costs related to a large data breach disclosed in November 2025 that affected more than 37 million customers.

Because of these events, the company has posted net losses for three straight quarters in 2026.

The results highlight the risk that operational disruptions and security incidents pose to a fast‑growing e‑commerce business that relies heavily on its logistics network.
