In brief
Jonas previously tackled corruption issues, now aims to smoothen ties with the US.
South Africa is making moves to repair its rocky relationship with the United States by appointing a special envoy, Mcebisi Jonas. This decision comes in light of strained relations since Donald Trump stepped back into the political arena. President Cyril Ramaphosa introduced Jonas, emphasizing his role in advancing South Africa's diplomatic, trade, and bilateral interests.Jonas, who once served as deputy finance minister, made headlines by alleging corruption against the Gupta family, linked to former President Jacob Zuma. Recently, relations soured when the US expelled South Africa’s ambassador, Ebrahim Rasool.Jonas, now tasked with being the official representative, will handle negotiations and work to create strategic partnerships with US officials and the private sector. This is not Jonas's first encounter with international relations—he was previously an investment envoy in 2018 to attract foreign investments. He gained prominence after rejecting a bribe of 600 million rand to become finance minister, a scandal that highlighted corruption in high offices in South Africa.Ramaphosa's administration has faced challenges as Trump cut aid over issues like land confiscation and criticized South Africa for its stance on Israel. Trump has also threatened to boycott the upcoming G20 Summit in South Africa due to these disputes.Jonas is also the chair of the telecommunications giant MTN Group and will continue his work there while representing the country internationally. Ramaphosa's decision to send envoys underscores the South African government's intent to clarify its position on controversial issues and hopefully restore a positive relationship with the US.
