On Saturday, French authorities arrested 779 people across France during protests against the rising cost of living. Roughly 320,000 people took part nationwide, with 70,000 demonstrators in Paris.

Most marches passed off peacefully, but tensions grew during dispersal in several cities. In Paris, a homemade explosive device detonated at the feet of a security officer near Porte de Charenton in the 12th arrondissement, leaving the officer slightly injured.

The Paris prosecutor’s office opened an investigation on suspicion of attempted murder related to the explosive incident.
