For 95 long days, 61-year-old Peruvian fisherman Máximo Napa Castro battled solitude on the vast Pacific Ocean, all the while praying for a miracle that would bring him back to his family. Stranded since December 7, when he set sail from Marcona, he faced unimaginable challenges, including an absence of food and clean water. Resourcefully, he turned to eating cockroaches, birds, and even a turtle to stave off hunger and thirst. At times, anger towards God seeped into his heart, leading him to question his fate: “What am I going to find here? Who’s going to save me?” Yet, in his moments of despair, he found solace in the belief that help was on the way.On March 12, his prayers were answered when he was discovered by the crew of an Ecuadorean tuna boat, floating hundreds of miles from land. His astonishing survival and rescue highlighted not only his strength but also the power of hope. Máximo has now returned to his family, and his story serves as a testament to resilience amidst overwhelming odds.
