In brief
Japanese research firm Teikoku Databank has reported that 1,477 food and beverage products will see price hikes in November, a sharp jump from only 150 items a year earlier. The increases are led by seasonings and beverages, and the total number of goods rising this year has crossed 20,000 for the second straight year. A Teikoku Databank official said firms may slow the pace of new hikes next year as they respond to consumer sensitivity to higher prices.
A survey from Japanese research firm Teikoku Databank reported that 1,477 food and beverage products in Japan will see price increases in November, signaling a sharp uptick in consumer costs.
The increase marked a jump from only 150 items last November, almost ten times the number of products that were raised a year earlier.
Seasonings, including sauces and mayonnaise, made up the largest share of the changes, with 644 items expected to rise, followed by alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages with 417 items. These categories together account for a little more than one third of the affected goods.
Those 1,477 products come from 195 major Japanese manufacturers. Across all product categories, the total number of items scheduled for price hikes this year reached 20,327, marking the second consecutive year that the figure has exceeded 20,000.
The research firm noted that in 2027, companies might slow the rate of price increases as they pass on higher costs while closely monitoring how consumers respond.
According to a Teikoku Databank official:
Price increases may slow as companies pass on higher costs while carefully gauging consumer responses.
The findings highlight an ongoing trend of extended price hikes across key consumer goods, as manufacturers adjust pricing in an environment of rising input costs.
