A Gazan woman who was flown to Italy for urgent treatment has tragically died in hospital due to severe malnutrition. Marah Abu Zuhri, aged 20, arrived in Pisa with her mother last Wednesday as part of an Italian government initiative aimed at providing care for those affected by the Israel-Gaza conflict. Unfortunately, she suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away just 48 hours later.
The University Hospital of Pisa confirmed that Marah had experienced significant weight and muscle loss, reflecting the grim warnings from the UN regarding widespread malnutrition in Gaza. In total, Italy has received over 180 children and adults since the onset of the conflict, with 31 patients arriving recently in cities like Rome, Milan, and Pisa, many suffering from serious medical issues.
Meanwhile, British lawmakers have called for the urgent evacuation of sick children from Gaza to the UK, following a promise from Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer to set up a scheme for their care. The UK Home Office has stated plans to accelerate the evacuation process for hundreds of children, pending necessary biometric checks.
In Israel, the government announced the provision of tents and assistance for Gaza City residents, amidst ongoing military action. The situation in the Zeitoun district has been described as "catastrophic" due to sustained Israeli bombardment, with at least 36 casualties reported recently. Gaza's health ministry claims malnutrition-related deaths have exceeded 250, although Israeli officials dispute these figures, arguing that their targets remain focused on combatants rather than civilians. More than 60,000 people are reported to have lost their lives since the war began, underscoring the devastating toll of the ongoing conflict.
