In brief
The partnership aims to tackle slowing EV demand through collaboration, boosting both companies' growth.
Volkswagen Group (VW) has announced a groundbreaking joint venture with Tesla competitor Rivian, now valued at $5.8 billion, up from an initial $5 billion investment. This partnership comes at a critical time as global demand for electric vehicles (EVs) slows and competition rises, particularly from Chinese manufacturers. Following the news, Rivian's shares surged over 9% in after-hours trading. The venture will allow both companies to access vital technology, supporting Rivian's upcoming launch of its R2 model, a more compact and affordable SUV set for next year. VW plans to leverage Rivian's tech in its own vehicles, with new models expected to hit the market by 2027. "Combining our expertise will help reduce development costs and expedite tech innovation," the companies stated. Development teams will collaborate in California, with additional facilities planned across North America and Europe.
