In a cozy apartment in Guatemala City, Fabriccio Díaz, 28, and his wife, Lucía Ramírez, 25, are bringing analogue photography back to life with their venture, Arca Film Lab. This is the only fully operational photo film development lab in Central America, attracting over 60 clients a month as they’ve developed more than 800 rolls this year alone.

It all commenced as a small passion project. The couple, initially self-taught through YouTube and guidance from international labs, started out by developing their own films. As friends began requesting their services, Arca Film Lab was born, becoming the go-to place for all kinds of film development, including the intricate E-6 process for color films.

Their camaraderie with other film enthusiasts has blossomed through events they organize, like photo walks in Antigua, where people converge to capture moments using vintage cameras. Young photographers, such as Iván Ortiz, find something special in using old cameras, saying, "It's like having nostalgia for a generation we were never a part of."

Challenges are real, though. Access to quality analogue cameras and necessary development chemicals is tough due to strict regulations. Despite these hurdles, Fabriccio and Lucía prioritize their intentional, hands-on approach to film development, ensuring a personal touch in their growing business.

With dreams of expanding their services and strengthening ties with global film brands, the duo is on a mission to revitalize the classical cinematography landscape in Central America, proving that with passion and creativity, a little lab can make a big impact. Their adorable cat, Toto, also adds a unique charm to their process, making Arca Film Lab a truly memorable venture.
