In brief

Cassius, the world's largest captive crocodile, brought joy and fascination to many during his remarkable life and lengthy stay at a wildlife sanctuary.

Cassius, the giant saltwater crocodile who gained fame as the world's largest crocodile in captivity, has died at a wildlife sanctuary in Australia at the age of at least 110. Measuring nearly 5.5 meters (18 feet) and weighing close to one ton, he had become an iconic attraction at Marineland Melanesia on Green Island in Queensland. After being captured in the Northern Territory during the 1980s, Cassius lived a long and eventful life, once known for catching cattle and attacking boat propellers. He was certified by the Guinness World Records in 2011. The habitat’s founder, George Craig, who shared a deep bond with Cassius for over 37 years, had recently relocated, and Cassius's health declined shortly after. The sanctuary thanked visitors for their support, promising to continue honoring Cassius’s memory.
