New Zealand police have released fresh CCTV footage believed to show a fugitive who disappeared with his three children more than three years ago. The night-time footage shows two people in full-body clothing - who police are 'confident' is Tom Phillips and one of his children - apparently breaking into a store before driving away on a quad bike.
Detective Senior Sergeant Andy Saunders told a press conference that the pair made off with some 'grocery items'. Mr. Phillips went missing in December 2021 after losing legal custody of his children to their mother.
Since then, a national search has been underway for Mr. Phillips and his children: Ember, Maverick, and Jayda. The break-in occurred in Piopio, Northern New Zealand, around 02:00 local time. Police believe that Mr. Phillips had unsuccessfully targeted the same store in November 2023.
Detective Saunders expressed concern for the children's wellbeing, stating, 'At the heart of this are three children who have been away from their home for four years.' Mr. Phillips faces a range of charges including aggravated robbery and illegal possession of a firearm. Authorities are examining if he has support from others, raising questions about his motives.
Last October, the Phillips family was publicly sighted for the first time after their disappearance, noting that the children had not had contact with others or received education. Previous efforts to locate them, including a reward, have not been successful. Phillips's family has urged him to come home, emphasizing their love and support.
