In brief

In a move to promote open skies and simplify travel within the continent, Kenya's cabinet has announced that citizens from nearly all African countries can visit without prior travel authorization, except for Somalia and Libya due to security concerns. This decision comes as Kenya aims to enhance tourism while addressing past criticisms of its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system, which was seen as a restrictive visa requirement. Under the new policy, African visitors will have the freedom to stay in Kenya for up to two months without the ETA, while citizens from East African Community countries can remain for up to six months. Kenya also plans to improve the traveler experience at airports and introduce quicker approval processes, reflecting a push by the African Union for easier intra-continental travel.

Previously, most travelers needed to apply for an ETA at least three days before their trip, paying a fee of $30 and undergoing vetting for security reasons. Critics had raised concerns about the complexity of the ETA, claiming it hindered potential visitors. To bolster travel security, Kenya also plans to introduce enhanced pre-screening systems at entry points. The overall aim of these changes is to facilitate smoother travel for tourists and strengthen tourism growth in the region.
