In a tragic turn of events, Andriy Portnov, a 51-year-old former aide to the ousted pro-Russian Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych, was shot dead outside an American school in Madrid, Spain. Portnov had just dropped his children off at the school located in Pozuelo de Alarcón when an unidentified assailant opened fire, reportedly hitting him multiple times before escaping into a nearby park.
Portnov was involved in Ukraine’s political scene, serving as a member of parliament and deputy head under Yanukovych. After fleeing Ukraine following the Revolution of Dignity in 2014, he returned briefly before being sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury for his past actions, including attempts to manipulate the judiciary.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with several shots fired just as children were arriving at school. One student mistook the gunfire for firecrackers, while bystanders rushed to assist Portnov. Despite the rapid response, he was declared dead at the scene due to multiple bullet wounds.
Authorities launched a search for the suspect, initially describing the shooter as a slender man in a blue tracksuit, possibly with an accomplice on a motorcycle. No arrests have been made yet.
This unfortunate incident recalls previous attacks in Spain, including a 2018 shooting involving a Colombian drug trafficker. The motives behind Portnov's assassination remain unclear as investigations continue into his death, which adds another layer to the complex and often violent background of Ukrainian politics. Portnov had also faced legal battles, including a challenge against EU sanctions, and was under investigation for alleged treason related to Crimea, although no charges were ultimately pressed.
The case raises questions about ongoing geopolitical tensions involving former Ukrainian officials and potential links to foreign operatives, further complicating an already tense political landscape.
