Authorities are navigating the aftermath while feeling the impact on public safety and community trust.

Atlanta police sealed streets around the CDC headquarters in response to a shooting incident that occurred close to Emory University on Friday. Officer David Rose, who was critically injured during the event, later succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. The police have confirmed that a single shooter is deceased and clarified that no civilians were harmed during the chaos.

The motives surrounding the incident remain uncertain. Reports suggest that the shooter may have believed he was suffering from ailments related to a coronavirus vaccine. A concerning call from the shooter's father to police indicated that he was experiencing suicidal thoughts on the same day as the shooting. CDC Director Susan Monarez expressed her heartache, stating that immediate support from DeKalb County police, CDC security, and Emory University played a critical role in preventing further damage to the community.

At approximately 4:50 PM local time, the police were alerted to an active shooter situation near the CDC campus. Officers from various law enforcement agencies quickly responded. During the incident, Emory University urged people near the area to "RUN, HIDE, FIGHT," as the shooter fired multiple rounds into CDC buildings. Investigators noted that the shooter appeared to have been hit by gunfire, although they could not determine if it was from police or self-inflicted injuries.

In light of the violent event, employees at the CDC have been directed to work remotely starting Monday, as the community grapples with the aftermath of this shooting tragedy.
