On Oct. 27, a ceasefire in Alyoshki, a city in Ukraine’s Kherson region, was enacted as part of a deal brokered by US First Lady Melania Trump. The next day the city received a humanitarian mission that delivered several dozen tons of food, medicine, water and other essential supplies. Residents were also given an option to evacuate to either Russia or Ukraine.
Trump, who had helped negotiate the ceasefire, posted on X that the agreement had "provided residents with the freedom to move, access to food, clean water, medicine, plus a renewed sense of dignity without the constant threat of attack. Let Oleshky become the starting point for lasting peace."
The mission began at 4:00 a.m. Moscow time (1:00 a.m. GMT) on Oct. 27 and concluded on Oct. 30 when the aid was distributed. Aid included hygiene and sanitation products, fuels for generators and daily essentials, according to report manager Lantratova.
Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov had earlier described Alyoshki’s humanitarian situation as critical, noting that food and medicine could not reach the city because of Ukrainian shelling and drone attacks.
By allowing civilians to leave the conflict zone, the operation aimed to give people a chance to move to safety, while also hoping that the ceasefire would create a basis for lasting peace in the region.
