In a bold move that left many scratching their heads, President Trump recently signed an executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. This decision, aimed at highlighting “American greatness,” was met with a blend of confusion, annoyance, and laughter from citizens in Mexico and Cuba.

Francisco Javier Remes Sánchez, who leads a fishing association in Tamaulipas, Mexico, expressed his discontent, stating that the name change undermines the cultural and natural heritage that the gulf represents, dating back to the 16th century. He pointed out that the name change only applies in the U.S., as Trump's authority doesn't extend internationally.

Even the Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum reacted wittily, gleefully affirming that “for us and the whole world, it is still the Gulf of Mexico.” As the United States proceeds to alter official maps and documents to incorporate the new name, the rest of the region seems unfazed, continuing to embrace the gulf by its original name, while some share a good laugh at the situation.
