MIAMI (AP) — Dangerous tropical weather is brewing in the Atlantic Ocean with Hurricane Humberto intensifying into a powerful Category 4 storm, reaching maximum sustained winds of 145 mph. The storm is located around 375 miles northeast of the Leeward Islands and is moving westward. Humberto is predicted to generate life-threatening surf and rip currents across the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and Bermuda.

Meanwhile, another weather system threatening parts of the Bahamas and Cuba could soon develop into a tropical storm. This system is expected to approach Southeast U.S. early next week, with expectations of becoming a hurricane by late Monday.

In South Carolina, Governor Henry McMaster has declared a state of emergency to prepare for potential impacts. Crews are on standby in Charleston, ready with sandbags and high-water vehicles. The emergency preparatory measures come in light of the heavy rains already experienced by the Dominican Republic, which have caused significant flooding and evacuations.
