On Wednesday, a devastating bridge collapse in Gujarat, India, left at least 15 people dead and many more injured. Survivors reported that the sound of the collapse was reminiscent of an explosion or earthquake, leaving them in shock. Anwarbhai, who was driving when the bridge gave way, described a deafening crack that sent part of the bridge crumbling into the Mahisagar river, along with several vehicles.
Immediate rescue operations are underway, with at least four individuals still missing. Surender Singh from the National Disaster Response Force emphasized the urgency of locating survivors, and locals quickly jumped in to assist those trapped in the river.
Among the survivors, Sonalben Padhiyar tragically lost six family members in the accident. A heart-wrenching video of her calling for help has gone viral, reflecting the harrowing nature of the incident. Underlining the human toll, Dilipsinh Padhiyar, who was on the bridge just before its collapse, managed to survive by clinging to a metal rod in the water.
Eyewitnesses reported that the bridge often exhibited signs of wear, with locals expressing concerns about its safety long before the incident. In a political backlash, allegations have surfaced regarding the bridge's dilapidated state and the lack of governmental action despite repeated complaints.
While the Gujarat government asserts that inspections were conducted regularly and plans for a new bridge were underway, this tragedy has sparked renewed focus on India's aging infrastructure. Prime Minister Modi has expressed condolences to the victims' families and promised compensation as the nation reevaluates the safety of its public structures.
