After arriving in the U.S. in 2024, Paola Freites and her family were part of a large wave of immigrants settling in Florida, lured by a warm climate, job opportunities, and a vibrant Latino community. According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection data, Florida leads the nation in new migrant arrivals, especially in areas like Miami and Orlando.

Freites spoke about fleeing violence in Colombia and finding refuge in Orlando. 'We came here looking for freedom, to work. We don’t like to be given anything for free,' she shared. As more immigrants arrive, they contribute significantly to Florida's economy, with many finding jobs in hospitality and construction.

The state now showcases diverse shops and cultural offerings, with businesses catering to new arrivals from various Latin American countries. Despite challenges, such as fears of deportation under stricter immigration laws, the community remains resilient and dedicated to building new lives.
