ATLANTA (AP) — Passengers at Atlanta’s busy airport voiced a common concern on Saturday — it's time to pay Transportation Security Administration employees.
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, one of the world’s busiest, is struggling with TSA checkpoints that are currently overwhelmed. Travelers are now arriving as early as four hours before their flights, fearing delays could lead to missed departures.
Christian Childress, a private flight attendant, pointed out the frustrating situation. While he bypasses TSA lines during his work, he faced a commercial flight's long lines when traveling for leisure. He emphasized, Issue No. 1 should be paying the people who need to get paid and keeping our air travel system secure.”
Since the current government shutdown began, TSA officers have not received paychecks. Funding disputes have stalled necessary financial support, leading to concerns of increased wait times at checkpoints.
Travelers have voiced their frustration toward political leaders, indicating that they need to prioritize airport security and staff compensation. President Trump has also suggested that if the standoff continues, federal immigration officers might take on airport security roles.
As some passengers experience wait times upwards of 90 minutes, many are hoping for quick resolutions to help minimize airport chaos in the coming days.
