In brief
The recovery operation for the Bayesian superyacht, which sank last August, faced tragedy as a diver perished during preliminary efforts. The investigation into the sinking continues as salvage operations gear up.
A diver has tragically died during the recovery operations for British tech tycoon Mike Lynch's luxurious superyacht, which sank off the northern coast of Sicily. Local police reported that the accident happened while the diver, a 39-year-old from the Netherlands, was working underwater in Porticello, although the exact cause of death is under investigation. This unfortunate event occurred as salvage vessels mobilized to recover the Bayesian yacht, which sank during severe weather conditions in August. The catastrophic incident claimed the lives of seven individuals on board, including Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter, Hannah. Among the other victims were notable figures such as Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife.Currently, about 70 specialists from across Europe are gathered in Sicily for the salvage operation being led by British marine consultancy TMC Marine and several Dutch maritime services. Progress has been made, and plans to lift the yacht out of the water are set to begin soon, pending favorable weather conditions. Investigators continue to look into the circumstances surrounding the sinking, especially since a vessel like the Bayesian should have been able to handle rough seas. Standby efforts to ensure no pollution leaks from the yacht are being monitored as preparations advance for the recovery.
