In brief
In a recent vote, a community advisory committee rejected the Mohegan Sun's plan to develop a casino and resort near the United Nations in Manhattan. Despite a proposal that included over 1,000 affordable housing units and various community amenities, the committee voted 4-2 against the project, leaving other casino proposals in the running for licenses in New York City. This decision marks the end of the last remaining proposal for Manhattan, with other high-profile casino plans also being discarded recently.
NEW YORK (AP) — In a major decision for the city, a community panel has rejected a proposed Mohegan Sun casino resort near the United Nations. This ambitious project included hotels, retail spaces, dining, entertainment options, and over 1,000 units of affordable housing. Despite developers’ promises to enhance community infrastructure with a museum dedicated to democracy and public spaces, the committee voted 4-2 against the proposal with minimal discussion. The rejection follows similar outcomes for high-profile casino projects in Times Square and Hudson Yards. As the competition for three state gambling licenses continues, only five proposals now remain in the running, including those for sites in the Bronx and Brooklyn.
