The suspect in the shooting death of 31-year-old right-wing activist Charlie Kirk is reportedly 'not cooperating' with law enforcement, according to Utah's Governor Spencer Cox. Tyler Robinson, 22, was apprehended after Kirk was shot at an open-air event in Orem, Utah, on Wednesday. While Robinson remains silent, Cox indicated that people surrounding him have been assisting authorities in their inquiries.
In a series of television appearances, Cox expressed ongoing concerns regarding the role of social media following Kirk's death. Notably, reports suggest Robinson had engaged in conversations on the platform Discord after the incident, where he allegedly joked about being the shooter. The governor confirmed that these conversations took place but noted suspicions from others regarding Robinson's involvement until he eventually admitted to it.
Robinson was taken into custody after surrendering to police Thursday night and is facing serious charges, including aggravated murder. Currently held without bail at Utah County Jail, authorities are interviewing numerous individuals from Robinson's life to uncover potential motives.
The tragic event has sparked discussions about unity and accountability in the digital age, as Governor Cox calls for a culture shift away from divisive rhetoric. A memorial service for Kirk is set to take place on September 21 in Arizona, and the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting is ongoing, with more information expected to be revealed as charges are filed.
