Mexican authorities have confirmed that an arrest warrant has been issued for boxer Julio César Chávez Jr. on charges related to organized crime and arms trafficking. This revelation comes just a day after he was apprehended by U.S. immigration agents in California, where he had been staying illegally. The Department of Homeland Security reported that Chávez is believed to have connections with the infamous Sinaloa Cartel.
Mexican officials stated that U.S. agencies notified them regarding the boxer’s detention. The warrant for Chávez, 39, was reportedly filed back in March 2023. His legal team has not commented on the situation yet. Notably, his arrest follows a recent loss against former YouTuber Jake Paul in a widely publicized match.
Chávez, who previously held the World Boxing Council middleweight title, is the son of the iconic Julio César Chávez Sr., a figure who has garnered significant public attention in Mexico recently. It has been noted that Chávez Jr. originally entered the U.S. in 2023 on a B2 tourist visa, which expired in 2024. Following this, he applied for permanent residency based on his marriage to an American citizen, who had past ties to the Sinaloa Cartel.
