Pope Francis spent a restful night at the Rome hospital where he has been in critical condition due to pneumonia and a complex infection, the Vatican announced on Sunday morning. The brief statement from the Vatican noted, “The night passed quietly, the Pope rested,” but didn’t elaborate further, as worldwide concern for the 88-year-old pontiff continues to grow.
Earlier, the Vatican reported that Francis had experienced a severe “asthmatic respiratory crisis” that necessitated “high flows of oxygen” and a blood transfusion. Despite this, sources indicated the Pope remained alert. He was admitted to the Policlinico Agostino Gemelli on February 14, diagnosed with a complex respiratory tract infection that progressed into pneumonia in both lungs. Physicians on his case noted that his treatment was complicated due to his advanced age and prior lung troubles.
On Friday, doctors publicly labeled his condition as critical, emphasizing that his health status could fluctuate daily. Surgeon Sergio Alfieri revealed that Francis is conscious of his condition, saying, “both doors are open.” Vigils and prayers for the Pope's recovery have been taking place worldwide, while Cardinal Baldassare Reina plans a Mass at the Basilica of St. John Lateran to pray for healing.
In response to the situation, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that President Donald Trump has been briefed on the Pope's health and extended sentiments of hope and prayers for his recovery.
