In brief

Immigrant advocates are confronting fears as routine stops lead to significant arrests, sparking community outcry against these escalating operations.

In early May, Nashville residents felt the impact of heightened immigration enforcement as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents collaborated with Tennessee State Highway Patrol troopers for a weeklong operation in predominantly Hispanic neighborhoods. This unusual partnership has sparked worries and protests amidst the local immigrant community. The operation led to nearly 200 immigration-related arrests, inciting strong reactions from Nashville's officials and residents. Mayor Freddie O’Connell criticized the operation for causing “deep community harm,” spotlighting the city's contrasting political climate in an otherwise conservative state. Meanwhile, organizations like The ReMIX Tennessee have been proactive, setting up hotlines and sharing updates about ICE activity, aiming to protect vulnerable community members.Cathy Carrillo, co-founder of The ReMIX, expressed the community's fear: “If we weren’t out there documenting everything, it could have been much worse.” Reports indicate that while the ICE focused on removing individuals deemed threats, many of those detained lacked criminal backgrounds. ICE defended the operation, claiming that 96 of the 196 arrested had prior convictions. The Tennessee Highway Patrol, standing firm against allegations of racial profiling, stated all traffic stops were conducted lawfully, resulting in 660 traffic violations during the operation. This collaboration has raised alarms; many fear further escalations in immigration enforcement as state and local agencies increasingly partner with federal authorities. As Nashville grapples with this situation, residents remain on alert, navigating life amid a climate of anxiety surrounding potential arrests.
