In brief

As tariffs threaten aluminum prices, Coca-Cola contemplates shifting to more plastic packaging, raising environmental concerns.

In a recent investor call, Coca-Cola's CEO, James Quincey, indicated that the beverage giant may turn to plastic bottles in response to rising aluminum costs stemming from President Trump’s 25% tariffs on imported steel and aluminum. This move highlights the balance between affordability and sustainability as the company has scaled back its goal of using 50% recycled materials in packaging by 2030 to 35%-40% by 2035.Environmental advocates have criticized Coca-Cola as the "top global plastic polluter" for six years running. Quincey stated, "If one package suffers some increase in input costs, we continue to have other packaging offerings that will allow us to compete." His comments suggest the company could emphasize PET plastic bottles if aluminum prices soar. While aluminium cans, known for their recyclability, have gained prominence in Coca-Cola’s product presentation, the rising costs threaten this strategy. Notably, the US imports nearly half of its aluminum, making the imposed tariff likely to inflate can prices. In a notable policy shift, Trump also recently reversed a move to replace plastic straws with paper alternatives. This change adds another layer to the ongoing plastic pollution debate, further complicating Coca-Cola's sustainability efforts.
