In brief
Uruguay has ushered in a new era as Yamandú Orsi of the Broad Front coalition defeats Álvaro Delgado, promising unity and dialogue for all citizens.
In a notable turn in Uruguay's political landscape, former history teacher Yamandú Orsi has successfully claimed the presidency, defeating Álvaro Delgado by over three percentage points in a closely contested run-off election. This victory marks the return of the left-leaning Broad Front after five years of conservative governance under President Luis Lacalle Pou, who could not run again due to constitutional limits. At 57 years old, Orsi embodies a humble beginnings story, having grown up without electricity in rural Uruguay. His political journey began in education as a school history teacher before rising to the role of mayor in Canelones, where he attracted investments from tech giant Google by promoting a business-friendly environment. Addressing his supporters following the election, Orsi expressed a desire for unity, vowing to be a president for all 3.4 million Uruguayans and emphasizing the importance of national dialogue.Outgoing President Lacalle Pou has committed to facilitating a smooth transition before Orsi's inauguration set for March 1 of next year. Although Orsi's coalition gained significant control in the Senate, it fell short of a majority in the Chamber of Representatives. Intriguingly, Uruguay’s election results stand out in contrast to the polarized political climates seen in other countries across the Americas, showcasing the potential for moderation and cooperation.
