In brief

Ukrainian authorities say a Russian aerial attack on Komyshuvakha killed 18 people and left 27 missing, while another report claims 26 dead. The strike hit a school providing humanitarian aid, prompting President Zelensky to call out the bombing. Rescue crews are still searching for survivors.

On 2 November, Ukrainian officials reported that a Russian aerial strike on the settlement of Komyshuvakha in the Zaporizhzhia region killed 18 people and left 27 others missing. President Volodymyr Zelensky posted on X that ten bombs struck a school where humanitarian aid was being distributed, confirming the deaths and several injuries.

The same day, the secretary of the Zaporizhzhia City Council, Regina Harchenko, shared on Facebook that 27 people were listed as missing after the attack, and that search and rescue efforts were underway at the scene.

An independent Ukrainian news outlet, “Українська правда,” reported that the Russian bombardment killed 26 people, including police officers and first responders, and listed five injured and 27 missing. The article stated that the strike hit an aid distribution center and a neighboring shelter.

Both accounts agree that the target was a humanitarian facility, but they differ on the number of casualties. Search crews are continuing to comb the rubble for survivors and to confirm the death toll.

The strike illustrates the ongoing danger to aid workers and residents in southern Ukraine, where Russian bombing campaigns frequently hit civilian sites. International aid agencies are calling for clearer protection of humanitarian operations in conflict zones.
