A stunning oil portrait of Mahatma Gandhi, painted in 1931 by British artist Clare Leighton, has just been auctioned off in London for an impressive £152,800 ($204,648). This sale smashed the auction house Bonhams's initial estimate of £50,000-£70,000. The painting, believed to be the only oil portrait of Gandhi that he sat for, depicts him during his visit to London for the Round Table conference, which aimed to discuss India's self-governance. Clare Leighton was one of the select few artists permitted to meet Gandhi multiple times to create this artwork. After remaining in her family collection until her passing in 1989, the portrait has now entered a new chapter with its recent sale, although the identity of the buyer and plans for the painting's display remain unknown. Gandhi's legacy as the "father of the nation" continues to inspire countless individuals worldwide.
