In brief

India's space agency, Isro, successfully accomplished its first space docking with the SpaDeX mission, positioning the nation among global leaders in space technology.

Isro, India's space agency, celebrated a historic achievement as it successfully executed its first-ever space docking with the SpaDeX mission. Launched on December 30 from Sriharikota, two small spacecraft, named the Chaser and Target, demonstrated a crucial technology for India's future plans, including the construction of a space station and lunar missions. After numerous delays, the docking was completed successfully, marking India as the fourth nation with this advanced capability, following the United States, Russia, and China. Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged the significance of this milestone, highlighting its importance for future Indian space endeavors. The testing allowed the Chaser and Target to gradually close in from 15 meters to just 3 meters apart before securely docking. The mission aims to transfer power between the two spacecraft and conduct experiments, including growing crops in microgravity, indicating future possibilities for long-term space missions. Additionally, there's a focus on minimizing space debris by repurposing parts of the rocket involved in the mission. The robotic arm aboard the spacecraft will also play a vital role in future projects, like capturing space debris and supporting lunar exploration activities in India's upcoming Chandrayaan-4 mission. This breakthrough underlines India's growing capacity in global space exploration and technology development.
