In brief

In a significant move, the Energy Department has canceled $3.7 billion in previous government awards aimed at innovative technologies to combat global warming.

The Energy Department has decided to axe a total of $3.7 billion in awards previously given to companies developing technologies intended to alleviate pollution and combat climate change. This decision, announced by Energy Secretary Chris Wright, affects 24 projects, which included efforts from industrial firms to capture carbon emissions from cement, glass, and chemicals production. Some notable cuts involve a $540 million grant to Calpine aimed at carbon capture in California and Texas, and a $331 million grant to Exxon Mobil for a lower-emissions hydrogen initiative at a chemical facility in Baytown, Texas. Wright criticized the rushed process that led to these awards under the last administration, claiming they weren’t thoroughly vetted for financial viability or public benefit. “These projects simply didn’t meet the energy needs of the American people or make sense for taxpayer dollars,” he stated. As climate tech progresses, the spotlight remains on how to effectively boost sustainable solutions without financial pitfalls.
