In brief
A review highlights major errors by British police in the case of Harry Dunn, a teenager killed in a crash with an American driver who later fled the UK.
An independent review has sharply criticized the police in Britain over their handling of a 2019 road collision involving an American driver, Anne Sacoolas, and British teenager Harry Dunn. The collision, which resulted in Dunn's tragic death, raised concerns when Sacoolas fled the UK shortly afterward, claiming diplomatic immunity. The report, spanning 118 pages, states that law enforcement should have arrested Sacoolas at the scene and mishandled critical forensic evidence. Furthermore, it condemned a senior officer's social media comments about the incident and the overall treatment of Dunn's grieving parents, Charlotte Charles and Tim Dunn. Emma James, head of protective services for Northamptonshire Police, publicly apologized to the family, acknowledging the police’s failures during their investigation. The crash occurred in August 2019 when Sacoolas was driving on the wrong side of the road near Croughton, leading to tragedy as her vehicle struck Dunn, who later died in the hospital. The aftermath sparked international tension when the U.S. government dismissed Britain's extradition request for Sacoolas, arguing it would undermine diplomatic immunity principles. The findings from this review add further complexity to an already fraught situation, emphasizing the need for accountability and reform in law enforcement practices.
