In brief
The ongoing trend shows a mix of fascinating themes and quick reads capturing critical acclaim.
The International Booker Prize has announced its 2025 nominees, and guess what? Most of the books are under 200 pages! Of the 13 titles, only one – Romanian author Mircea Cartarescu's "Solenoid," spanning 627 pages – breaks the 300-page barrier. This long novel has also caught the eye of critics and is deemed a potential leading contender. Among the shorter nominees is Saou Ichikawa's 100-page "Hunchback," exploring the intimate desires of a disabled care home resident, and Solvej Balle’s 169-page "On the Calculation of Volume I," which captures a day repeated endlessly by an antiquarian book dealer. Max Porter, this year's judging panel chair, emphasized that the prevalence of shorter novels isn’t a reflection of waning attention spans but a result of the panel’s honest best-read selection. He pointed out that crafting a concise narrative poses its unique challenges, stating, “Some of these books don’t have a wasted word.” With a ceremony set for May 20 at Tate Modern in London, the literary world eagerly anticipates which work will take home the prestigious award!
