In brief
Depardieu's trial, linked to serious accusations, is a pivotal case for France's #MeToo effort, as he stands as the highest-profile individual under scrutiny.
In an appeal to the courts, 75-year-old Gerard Depardieu has requested a delay in his sexual assault trial, which was set to commence in Paris. His legal representative, Jeremie Assous, stated that the actor's health has been a concern, and medical advice advised against his attendance. Depardieu faces serious allegations from two women, claiming he made explicit comments and assaulted them during the filming of "Les Volets Verts." If found guilty, he could face a five-year imprisonment. The actor has vehemently denied these allegations, asserting in a previous letter that he has never "abused a woman." This trial marks a significant moment in France, given that it’s one of the most prominent cases to emerge from the #MeToo movement in the country. The accusations, including claims of "groping" and violence, have not only tarnished Depardieu's reputation but have also contributed to his isolation in the entertainment industry. He has not participated in any film projects since 2022 and faces another trial next year related to separate rape charges, which he also denies. Following these allegations, he has faced accusations of involvement in multiple sexual misconduct cases. Interestingly, despite the controversy, Depardieu has garnered support from a faction of France's artistic community, where more than 50 notable figures co-signed a letter voicing their solidarity with him. The letter, published last year, described the accusations as a threat to artistic freedom, while French President Emmanuel Macron's previous comments labeling Depardieu a "pride of France" ignited backlash, with critics arguing it jeopardized the fight against violence towards women. Amidst the ongoing debate, France's then-culture minister, Rima Abdul-Malak, expressed intentions to reconsider Depardieu's Legion d'Honneur following disturbing footage of his behavior in a 2018 documentary.
