Carter Emmart, the visionary behind the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, is preparing to embark on his next great adventure after an incredible 30 years. This 64-year-old astro-visualization maestro has spun tales of the universe through stunning planetarium shows, inviting audiences to witness the beauty of galaxies, stars, and cosmic phenomena like never before.
Mr. Emmart's style is as unique as his work – think shoulder-length hair, colorful beads, and a signature blue astronaut jumpsuit. His Manhattan workspace is a whimsical blend of science and playfulness, filled with Barbies dressed in global costumes, used for design models in his captivating presentations.
During his time at the planetarium, millions have experienced his immersive journeys into space, from the explosive end of stars to the mysterious dark matter that surrounds us. Featuring memorable narrations from celebrities like Tom Hanks and Neil deGrasse Tyson, his shows have traveled internationally, reaching audiences in over 60 institutions across 40 countries.
On June 9, 2025, he unveiled his final show, “Encounters in the Milky Way,” which explores the rich history and potential future of our galaxy. As summer approaches, Emmart looks forward to retiring in peaceful Thailand, embracing nature's tranquility after a career full of cosmic wonders.
