Suttasitt 'Macky' Pottasak is a typical candidate of Thailand's People's Party: young, idealistic, and hardworking. He gave up a career in TV drama production in Bangkok to run in the last election, winning a rural seat near his home city of Nakhon Ratchasima from an old, established political family. He adopts the hat and flag of Luffy, the main character in the Japanese anime series One Piece, which has been featured in recent youth protests across Asia. Macky creates light-hearted videos about his party's policies that have garnered millions of views on social media.
Politics is something past generations made boring. I want to make it fun, he states. We don’t have money to buy votes. We are just ordinary citizens, but with a strong determination to tackle long-standing problems, I think the villagers can see that. Polls show that much of the Thai public resonates with the People's Party as the election nears.
However, winning an election in Thailand has rarely ensured political success. The previous election resulted in a surprise victory for the progressive Move Forward Party, which campaigned for extensive political and economic reforms. Despite their popular support, the party was obstructed by powerful conservative forces, leading to its dissolution and banning of its leaders. With a long history of challenges for progressive movements, the People's Party is making another attempt at power.
While their youthful energy and innovative campaigning draw huge crowds, they are up against the reality that elections do not solely determine governance in Thailand. The system is rife with influential conservative institutions that have the power to upend or dissolve parties once they threaten the status quo.
As the election nears, the focus now lies on whether the People's Party can secure more seats than before and, crucially, what will happen when the votes are counted. Potential legal challenges loom, including cases against many party leaders, threatening their future in politics. The People's Party has a vision for a transformed Thailand, yet the road ahead is fraught with obstacles.
