US Vice-President JD Vance has insisted he was right to stage a two-day campaign visit to support Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán just days before Orbán was voted out of office. Defending Orbán, Vance described him as a 'great guy' who had performed well and was among few European leaders willing to confront EU bureaucracy. While expressing disappointment over Orbán’s defeat, Vance expressed optimism for future collaboration with the incoming government led by Péter Magyar. Magyar, critical of Vance's involvement, stated that foreign interference in elections is unwelcome. However, he acknowledged the importance of a strong partnership with the US. Despite the election results, Orbán will continue operations in a caretaker role until Magyar is inaugurated, with plans to convene a new parliament soon. Magyar aims to implement significant anti-corruption measures and restore Hungary's ties with the EU, seeking to recover funds frozen during Orbán’s term.
