President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Sean Duffy, a former congressman from Wisconsin and a Fox Business host, to oversee the Department of Transportation. Duffy is known for being a staunch supporter of Trump on television and becomes the second Fox commentator to join Trump's cabinet. If confirmed, he will be responsible for managing various transportation policies with a massive budget of around $110 billion.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump praised Duffy as a "tremendous and well-liked public servant” and expressed confidence in his ability to enhance the nation’s infrastructure while creating a "Golden Age of Travel" focused on safety, efficiency, and innovation. Duffy is not just a political figure; he has an interesting background as both a prosecutor and a reality TV star, having appeared on shows like The Real World: Boston.
Having served as a Republican in the House of Representatives from 2011 to 2019, Duffy is set to take over for Pete Buttigieg, who held the position under President Biden since 2021. The Department of Transportation, which comprises nearly 55,000 employees, deals with crucial safety and efficiency issues related to travel.
His appointment comes at a time when major safety issues loom over aviation, particularly concerning Boeing, alongside potential labor disputes. Trump's administration appears to prioritize appointing allies with media backgrounds, raising questions about policy experience among his new recruits. As Trump begins filling his administration’s ranks, eyes are on how these choices will impact transportation and infrastructure in America.
