Sergei Tikhanovsky, husband of Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, has called on President Donald Trump to use his influence to secure the release of political prisoners in Belarus. Just released after five years in solitary confinement, Tikhanovsky's emotional appeal came during a press conference in Lithuania, where he reunited with his wife. Thirteen other political prisoners were also released recently as U.S. envoy Keith Kellogg visited Belarus, marking a significant diplomatic moment.
During the press conference, Tikhanovsky detailed his atrocious conditions inside prison, stating he had no contact with the outside world, not even a letter or call. Describing his ordeal as "torture," he urged for the release of over 1,000 political prisoners still detained by the regime. Tikhanovsky was arrested in 2020 for intending to run against President Alexander Lukashenko. After a questionable trial, he was sentenced to 18 years in jail.
Both he and Tikhanovskaya eventually called out for more support from the international community, particularly emphasizing that Trump could play a crucial role in liberating innocent lives. Despite his past activism and popularity, Tikhanovsky insists he does not seek leadership but instead encourages Belarusians to unite against oppressive forces.
Tikhanovskaya, having stepped into her husband's political role during his imprisonment, expressed her joy and sorrow at reuniting with him. She highlighted the impact this release could have on their daughter, who didn't recognize her father due to his drastic transformation in prison. As Belarus faces a surge of human rights violations and political repression, Tikhanovsky's story exemplifies the urgent need for global attention and intervention.
