Edinburgh’s famous Hogmanay street party has been called off due to urgent weather warnings predicting rain, strong winds, and even snow. The Met Office issued alerts stating that the severe winter weather conditions would significantly impact outdoor events and travel plans.

While the street festivities in Edinburgh, renowned for drawing huge crowds, will not take place, indoor events and celebrations in other Scottish cities like Glasgow and Aberdeen are still on track. Hogmanay, a centuries-old festival celebrating the year's end, is usually brimming with exciting activities like torchlight processions, concerts, and breathtaking fireworks, but adverse weather has caused disruption in the past, too.

Met Office chief meteorologist Steve Willington warned of heavy rain expected across Scotland on New Year’s Eve, with strong winds predicted to create travel disruptions. More rain and possibly snow are on the horizon for the following days, with temperatures dropping significantly across Britain. Snow and icy conditions could complicate travel into January.
