In brief
Investigators have revealed a corruption scandal involving Moldovan officials that enabled fugitives, including drug traffickers, to exploit asylum protections and evade justice by slipping off Interpol’s wanted list.
A suspect tied to a significant drug trafficking case in France has uncovered a shocking corruption scheme that helped him and at least 20 other fugitives escape Interpol's Red Notice list. The individual, known as Tarik Kerbouci, was sought for three tons of cocaine seized in France but managed to vanish after being released in Dubai, having mysteriously been removed from the international police organization’s wanted list.Investigations led by French law enforcement authorities and Moldovan officials uncovered that officials in Moldova had been exploited. These corrupt individuals allegedly removed Red Notices against fugitives in exchange for payment, manipulating a system meant to protect genuine asylum seekers. This scandal has raised questions about Interpol’s oversight, especially as similar exploitative cases have surfaced regarding the abuse of Red Notices by countries like China and Russia against political dissidents.Moldova’s chief anticorruption prosecutor, Veronica Dragalin, indicated that the scheme involved the Interpol liaison office in Chisinau and immigration officials, with investigators also probing a former senior Interpol official who had relocated to Dubai. This investigation highlights the global challenges law enforcement faces as they attempt to navigate and combat corruption to maintain justice.
