In brief
The increasing power of the M23 group raises concerns over the future and sovereignty of Congo, as fighting and turmoil continue.
In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the M23 militia has significantly escalated its influence, now controlling valuable territories in the east, marking a pivotal threat to the nation’s sovereignty. With access to vital resources such as coltan, essential for smartphone production, the group operates almost like an official government, with M23 soldiers visibly present in cities like Goma and taking charge of local administration.Since its resurgence began in late 2021, M23’s well-armed fighters have moved swiftly, particularly in resource-rich areas, making substantial territorial gains. Recently, leaders from Congo and neighboring Rwanda met in Qatar to discuss a cease-fire, a call that M23 has yet to respond to. The United Nations has condemned their actions, but to date, neither the local army nor international intervention has hindered their momentum.Echoing a broader desire for power, M23 has robustly encouraged local youth to enlist, promising a mission to "liberate" Congo. Their ambition reportedly includes moving towards Kinshasa, the capital, posing an imminent threat to one of Africa's largest nations, where over 100 million people are impacted by decades of violent conflict and instability.
