Chernihiv, a city in north-eastern Ukraine, has plunged into a complete blackout following what local authorities are calling a massive assault by Russian missiles and drones. The attack has left hundreds of thousands of residents without power, and four people have been confirmed dead in the nearby town of Novhorod-Siverskyi.

As Russian forces increasingly target civilian infrastructure, including energy facilities, the consequences for the Ukrainian population are severe. The airspace around Chernihiv is particularly vulnerable due to its proximity to both Russia and Belarus.

In an attack involving over a hundred drones and multiple ballistic missiles, crucial electrical facilities were struck, rendering the city powerless. Local officials have pointed out that this tactic fits a disturbing pattern of escalating attacks on civilian sites as the conflict intensifies.

The blackout has not only interrupted power but has also impacted access to clean water, forcing residents to rely on emergency supplies and bottled water deliveries. While local engineers have begun efforts to restore electricity, the harsh winter ahead adds urgency to the situation as the city’s energy infrastructure faces unprecedented strain.

Despite the grim circumstances, residents like Oleksandr Babich maintain high morale, asserting their resolve to resist and support one another.

The hero city of Chernihiv did not give up and is not going to give up. Morale is high, he affirmed. This tenacity in the face of relentless attacks shows a community determined to survive and support each other during uncertain times.
