Firefighters have been fighting a fierce wildfire on the outskirts of Marseille, France, that has injured at least 110 people and led to widespread evacuations. The blaze began after a car fire in Les Pennes-Mirabeau, just north of the city, and quickly spread across around 1,700 acres. The French Interior Minister, Bruno Retailleau, confirmed that of those injured, at least 30 were firefighters. Thankfully, there have been no reported fatalities despite the fire's intensity.
Authorities are working with over 600 firefighters and aerial support while hundreds of residents have been urged to evacuate their homes, with 14,000 advised to stay indoors. The Marseille-Provence Airport temporarily halted flights as firefighters battled the flames intensified by strong winds and the aftermath of a heatwave affecting the region, which has increased risks for forest fires across the country.
